il porcile

Had this place not been recommended by a local shop owner, we would have probably never thought to go in. Hidden in the backstreets of Cagliari, this little pizzeria leaves a lot to be desired when you first lay your eyes on it. It looks rundown and pretty dimly lit but the bright yellow tablecloths demand your attention. We decided to give it a shot, you should never judge a book by its cover right?

So far I had been disappointed with pizza in Italy…and there aren’t many things more disappointing then that. I had scoured Tripadvisor for the top eats but it had failed me so far and you generally can’t go wrong asking the locals so here we were. The brown decor and huge wood fired oven gave the place a very rustic feel. All the staff were male and bantered between themselves in Italian. Eventually we caught their attention and one came over to take our order. He did not speak a word of English so we just pointed to what we wanted and hey presto our pizza was on its way.

I watched him as he flung our pizza base in the air, spinning it to get it perfectly round. Then he added the base and cheese, we ordered a margerita and buffalina so within a few seconds he had placed it into the furnace. It looked delicious, as I cut a slice of the thin and crispy base I was excited for my taste-buds! I took a bite and there it was, the best pizza I had ever had. A fresh tangy base with Italian herbs and delicious gooey cheese, it was simple and delicious. Italians always tell me simple pizzas are the best and when they get it right…they get it so right! We devoured the pizzas and promised ourselves that we would come back to have our final meal in Sardinia here and we did.

If you are ever in Cagliari, do not let the look of this place fool you! It is a rustic, family-owned authentic pizza joint which is all you need in Italy <3
